Florida Officer Resigns After Sending Fake Bomb To Another Cop

A Florida deputy has resigned after he sent a fake bomb to another officer as a joke. Lieutenant Joseph Gerretz opened the package at his desk and found a piece of paper with the word "boom" written on it large letters. Underneath the paper, Gerretz found a red cylinder with wires protruding from it. The building was evacuated and the bomb squad was called in.

A K9 united was brought over but did not alert to the device and the bomb squad determined it was a just a toy.

The fake device was sent by Deputy James Piper, who was a 35-year veteran of the force. Piper admitted to sending the bomb after Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri sent an email to all employees letting them know the bomb was not real. He told his supervisor it was meant to be a joke and offered his resignation.
