Florida Mom Arrested After Teacher Found 100s Of Bugs In Child's Backpack

A 33-year-old mother from Florida was arrested after her daughter showed up to school with a backpack filled with bugs. Authorities say they conducted a welfare check at the home of Jessica Stevenson after her daughter came to school wearing dirty clothes and carrying a backpack that was infested with hundreds of bugs.

When authorities arrived at her home in Milton, which is about 20 miles from Pensacola, they were shocked at what they saw. As they pulled up, they noticed bags of garbage strewn about the lawn and that some of the windows were broken. Inside the home, they found even more trash and an infestation of roaches. They said that the woman's five children were forced to sleep on dirty mattresses that were on the floor next to piles of cat feces.

When they searched Stevenson's bedroom, it was like they were in a different home. Her bedroom was immaculate, with fresh sheets and a closet full of clean clothes.

Authorities took custody of her five children, who are between the ages of 5 and 14. She was arrested and charged with five counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. She was released on a $2,500 bond and given a no-contact order for her children. She faces up to 25 years in jail if she is found guilty.
