Mayor Blangiardi "Dead Set Against" Rolling Back to Tier 2

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi went "on record" Monday, saying that he is "dead set against" rolling back to Tier 2 of Oahu's COVID-19 reopening plan.

Speaking at a media event for the City and County of Honolulu's new rent and utility assistance program, the mayor said he wants to see the city's tier system modified to more accurately reflect how many COVID-19 daily cases Honolulu and its health care capacity can handle.

The current administration inherited the tier system from the previous administration of Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Blangiardi stated, “I think quite honestly that the tier numbers, when they were constructed before, were being too low."

At another press conference yesterday, Governor David Ige noted that the language of the city's tier system mandated action and a possible rollback to Tier 2 by Wednesday, given the current COVID-19 case numbers on Oahu. However, the governor also noted that the city could simply ignore the language or change it so action was not required.
